I have been job hunting for several months now. So far, I’ve been very successful. Most of my applications have been via the NHS, because ultimately I know that’s my direction considering that I want to go into clinical psychology. Out of all these applications, I’ve only had one interview (unsuccessful of course). Recently, I’ve been asked to go to two more interviews (however, there’s a clash regarding the dates, and I don’t know which one I should sacrifice).
One of the main problems is the lack of experience, and lack of sufficient skills. Currently I have no direct experience working in mental health. Most of the experience I have now is voluntary youth work experience and some admin (retail is not relevant experience, but I’ve always somehow tied it in my applications). I wish there could be opportunities for graduates like me to gain some experience without being asked to have experience. There is a type of Catch-22.
It doesn’t help being on the JSA, either. There’s an air of desperation and despair in failing to get a job. I even did a week’s worth of market research work, because of this (thankfully, I’ve quit as I don’t like the mere idea of telephone market research).
Also, the fact that I lack interview experience is an issue. For the previous interview, I felt that I was unprepared. I had no idea what to expect! One or two of the questions did catch me off guard.
