I think it's time for an update (1/30/10)

first I want to start out with this invention called the iPad? wow. they thought of something like a touch screen computer… wait didnt they already do this? oh yeah. they did. its called an iPhone or the iPod touch. old ideas just making them bigger. wow. This annoys me.

secondly I want to tlk abt my life. My boyfriend, troy, has a very good chance of getting this job at blockbuster video. now this is good for one part(that he’ll have money) but bad because they told him that if he got the job they would make him work 2/3 of the weekend. i’m hoping its friday and sunday, but if its friday and saturday, well… i’m never gonna have a chance to see him anymore. I don’t know what I would do without this man. I love him and I really don’t want to lose him.

Third and final thing on my agenda to talk about is my icons entry. I’m thinking abt making a totally diff blog for entries like that. I have a lot of diff icons and stuff that I love and I want to remember them always lol. well that’s about it for today.

peace& love

Use it or lose it

Is what I found out this week. Wednesday I left the house to do some errands and got in my car and started it up…..but nothing happened. See when you don’t start up your car on a regular basis the battery slowly drains out. So I had to call a tow truck and then I had to drive the car for 20 minutes before I could shut it off and go do my errands. I decided to drive to the other side town so I could use up my twenty minutes. One errand was easy and I didn’t have to shut the car off so I did that one first. I had to mail the rent check and another item. All I had to do was drive up to the post office and drop them in the outside drive up boxes. So then I kept driving to my destination but my minutes weren’t up yet so I decided to turn around and go to the store I was going to go to in the first place. I kept checking the clock in the car as I was driving to make sure that I wouldn’t have to drive past the store I was headed to in order to use up my minutes. By the time I got to my original destination I had used up my minutes and a few more. When I parked and shut off the car I started it up again to make sure that when I left the store I wouldn’t have to call the tow truck again. Lucky for me I have them programmed into my cell phone.

So I have a choice for the future. I can go out to my car every other day and run it for 20 minutes or I can buy the thing the tow guy used to start my car. I know I can buy one for $50 or there abouts, which is what I paid the tow guy. So I can start surfing the Internet for prices and then go buy one.

I have been very busy this week taking a class online for a product that is going to be sold soon. I spent all my spare time doing that. It is a seasonal product but the next time it comes up I will only have to do the refresher and that won’t take so long. I took donation calls for the Haiti earthquake. Boy, the George Clooney thing went all over the world. I know this because that is where some of my calls came from. Ecuador, Ireland and so on and so forth.

We are all going to be pleasantly surprised at the new tax credits. But those who have already done their taxes already know about the new credits. I have yet to receive three more documents before I can do mine. All of them will be postmarked February 1 unfortunately for me. I am gung-ho and want to find out if I am really going to get something back or if I have to pay again.

I finally figured out how to stop getting text messages. Text messages on my phone plan are about $10 a pop if you delete them. Doesn’t matter that you didn’t even read them. So the next phone bill I get will be the last one I will have to pay for text messages. I went online to my cell phone company and tried to find how to block all text messages. The search turned up several alternatives. They are all bunched together so you have to read them and decide which one is going to do the trick. So guess what I had to do to get the text messages to stop. Yup I had to send a text message to get them to stop. It was quick easy and painless and I got a message back almost immediately confirming my request. So I can relax knowing that I will no longer get any more text messages.

Numero Uno

Hey all,

First post here, not much in the brain pan right now, It’s 2 am right now and i’m just chilling out before bed. I don’t tend to sleep well if I’ve got too much on my mind.

Days notes:

  • Started search for second job, I love my job but, (good pay) + (zero hours) doesn’t equal money in the bank. Also, I’m going to need more income if i ever want to move out of here. Rent is great, but room mates are all kinds of crazy and i can’t keep my own hours with thin walls and people sleeping on couches.
  • It finally got cold enough to relight the fireplace, which is awesome because i have the basement “room” and the extra warmth is more than welcome in the winter months. Midwest gets cold in January.
  • Second semester started a few days ago which is a welcome distraction from the snow drifts and icy roads. Let me just say, cabin fever is real and it sucks.
  • Worked out a few campaign setting ideas today too,  but our last campaign was a suck fest and everyone just wants to PLAY now, no one wants to run the game (including myself).

Well that pretty much does it for me. I have to get up early to do, something, don’t remember what anymore. So that’s the start of things and we’ll see how far i can run it.

To Anal Or Not To Anal

Last Friday was supposed to be my first anal night. I was told by the owner that punters would be charged more for their entry and I would be paid more. I remember the figure £200 being thrown about. I was excited if not rather nervous about this night. I’d only lost my anal-ginity a week previous. I had 2 weeks to practice! I was quite excited by the challenge though, of learning to take something I’d once never been able to bear the pain on, and make it look sexy!

I’d worked out that basically, other than a lot of lube and poppers, all I needed was the first guy to let ME be in control. As long as I back myself onto his cock rather than him ramming it into me, once I’ve taken the full length he can ride me like a pony! So I was all set for the night, with make-up for the bukkake shoot as well as poppers for the anal finale.

However when I got to the club I signed into the forum as I often do. I then found out that the anal night had been cancelled. Talking to the manager, the bukkake shoot was also off unless the owner arrived pretty pronto. I was a little relieved, but I’d worked myself up to it so much I was also disappointed.

My main problem came at the end when I was handed my cash. I asked if that was £200 and was told, ‘no, why?’ I explained that as far as I’d known I was getting £200 that night and since I’d not been told differently I didn’t expect any different. I was told that that was the fault of the owner and that I should take it up with him. They didn’t know that it was his plan to pay me more, and they claimed that they hadn’t made enough to pay me more. They did say I’d get my extra £50 even if it was out of the owner’s own pocket. I said that was fine and sorry for kicking up a fuss.

I’ve not worked this week but am at the club next week and twice in the following week. I hope to see the owner to clear this up some time before my holiday at Valentines. I need that money, I really do.

Starting Unemployment

The first weekend after I lost my job I didn’t want to deal with any of the mess I had to deal with. It was Halloween (my favorite holiday) so I tried to have fun anyway. So Monday morning hit and I wanted to get right on to all the paperwork that needed to be filed. It was so weird going into my old office. I felt like I had to be “fake nice” with all my former co-workers but truthfully I just looked around at them hating them. I wondered what they were thinking “will I be next?” Of course every Monday morning there is a meeting to discuss the business and where it’s going. My boss mentioned that a group had been laid off and of course everyone freaked. They asked if they should prepare their resumes and, of course, he said no. My advice to anyone that is currently working in a company that just did lay offs. DON’T BE STUPID! See the writing on the wall and get your resume together and portfolio prepared. I was reassured many times my job was safe and low and behold I was blindsided and laid off without warning.

Anyway, back to the paperwork, so really it was a fairly simple form. I really didn’t realize that it would be so simple just to file for unemployment. A couple simple steps and I was officially a government case. I found it really awesome that so much could be done online. No office visits or phone calls. Theoretically I wonder if you could make someone up and just start claiming unemployment.

So when I lost my job my boss said that he thought that my unemployment would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of my salary. HA big mistake, try 70%. Now you may be saying that is a lot but when you really break it down that is not much at all. I started factoring in all my expenses, $600 for rent and $825 for school loans are my significant costs every month. That doesn’t count electric, car costs, or groceries. So my $1288 per month for sure wouldn’t cover that. I had to do the unthinkable and ask my parents for a loan for my loan! Thankfully they have a lot of savings and are able to help me out for the moment. I was thinking to myself as I was crunching these numbers what would anyone do if they didn’t have someone to bail them out!? I don’t have a family, house or anything (I mean besides one cat) but if I did really I don’t know how I would get through this. I know thousands of people all over the country are doing this but wow it would be so hard.

One thing that my boss omitted from me when I lost my job is that he canceled my insurance the DAY after I lost my job. I had a dentist appointment scheduled for that week actually and thank god I didn’t go. Yet another reason my former boss really sucked. If you are going to blind side someone by laying them off without severance or an additional paycheck why cut off their health care right away as well! I didn’t have the time or resources to get something else set up. Another dick move but thank god I don’t have a lot of health problems. I had worked for him three months without any kind of health coverage so it would stand to reason that the health coverage would continue three months after you left that job. I am not sure of the legality issues here but seems a bit sneaky. I checked into what other options were for health care and it was horrible! $300 a month for the shittest service ever. I actually just heard that there is a lot of government aid available directly through hospitals. You can check into financial counseling at your nearest hospital and see if they can help you out. One of my friends mentioned having some huge back surgery and being in the hospital for 4 weeks. His bill was $800,000 and he didn’t pay a penny! The hospital took care of it. Look into it!

Setting up unemployment seemed to be the simple step, I didn’t realize that really there was a lot that wasn’t mentioned in the beginning that I had to learn the hard way.

Is this it?

As a 2009 graduate from the University of Toronto, I’ve seen my peers succeed and others stuggle. The economic forecast loomed dark and heavy and employers were cautious. The Daily Show, CNN, Strombo, bloggers and newspapers all told us we’d be jobless. Some would have to pick up survival jobs. Anything would do, really.

Almost a year later, many are without jobs and most without careers. Luckily, I landed a job in my field at a small grassroots not-for-profit organization located in the hearth of the Region of Peel…at least that’s what I have to try and convince myself of.

My job is an odd one. On the first day, I expected to have a desk, a company e-mail address and business cards. I imagined being given a tour of the agency. I imagined meeting people at my desk and filling out the obligatory paperwork. Instead, I was greeted by my boss, two cublicle walls and a desk that seemed to have been salvaged twice over. Turns out the not-for-profit comes with no frills.

The Story of Job

A while ago I posted the fact that I may be atheist or some sort of non-religious person (Christian). I also pointed to the story of Job as an example of why I think the God of the bible cannot possibly exist as the bible says. All those who have deconverted to atheism or agnosticism have something that turned them, whether it be contradictions with religious doctrine or the belief in reality (i.e. science) rather than fiction. For me it is the story of Job. I’m not completely “deconverted” but this is a story that I have trouble reconciling with. Before we get into the story of Job, we need to give an idea of what the God of the bible is according to Christian doctrine.

God is a being who has always existed. Nothing created him/her. They are omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent. They are infallible in every aspect of being. Nothing nor anyone in existence is as perfect as this God. They are also an all-loving being who unconditionally loves their creation, us. That is God, as I understand it from what I’ve grown up to believe.

On to Job. The story of Job is kind of depressing and scary at the same time. Job is this devout believer in God. Job was also very wealthy.

“(1) In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. (2) He had seven sons and three daughters, (3) and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. – Bible (NIV); Job 1:1-3

Then along comes Satan with an escort of angels. God asks Satan where he has been and Satan replies that he has been roaming the earth. In Job 1:8 God asks Satan to consider Job one of God’s prized individuals of the world. Satan replies:

“(9) ‘Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. (10) ‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. (11) But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.’” – Bible (NIV); Job 1:9-11

This is obviously a bet. Satan basically said, “I bet if you take all that Job has, he’ll abandon you.” What does God do?

“(12) The LORD said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’ Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.” – Bible (NIV); Job 1:12

God allows Satan to screw with Job’s life. So what does God allow to happen, keeping in mind this being is supposed to be omnibenevolent.

“(13) One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, (14) a messenger came to Job and said, ‘The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, (15) and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’

(16) While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’

(17) While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’

(18) While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, ‘Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, (19) when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!‘” – Bible (NIV); Job 1:13-19

And if that wasn’t enough, Satan wanted to take it farther and you guessed it, God obliges his enemy.

“(4) ‘Skin for skin!’ Satan replied. ‘A man will give all he has for his own life. (5) But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.’

(6) The LORD said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.’

(7) So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. (8) Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.” – Bible (NIV); Job 2:4-7

The first time God asks Satan to not touch Job but could take away everything else. The second time God asks Satan to spare Job’s life but could this time inflict bodily harm to him. God is supposed to be omnibenevolent (all-good) how is what God is doing, benevolent in any way? If it’s going to benefit by strengthening Job’s faith later, then the process of strengthening is not benevolent. There’s nothing good about allowing your enemy to kill the family of someone, who you claim to love, to prove a point to that enemy. It wasn’t as if Job happily took this in stride, the bible says that he suffered greatly (Job 2:13) to the point where he cursed the day that he was born in chapter 3. Again benevolence is in question. After 36 chapters of Job’s suffering and conversations with his friends, God decides to speak to him by going on this rant of questions referring to God’s power. Then for Job’s obedience for not getting upset with God for his losses, God rewards him:

“(10) After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. (11) All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.

(12) The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. (13) And he also had seven sons and three daughters. (14) The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. (15) Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.” – Bible (NIV); Job 42:10-15

I think this trivializes his first family. What basically happened was God allowed Satan to kill off Job’s livestock and family. Then after some time God basically says, “here’s a new family for your troubles” and Job happily accepts and lives out the rest of his days. I mean, come on, this is God making an example of someone and their life to prove something to someone he doesn’t even like. This whole ordeal is unnecessary. It’s wrong. Anyone who does something like this would be put in jail and rightfully so.

This is scary because a being that claims to love their creation, is willing to do this. God was willing to inhibit his power of intervention to allow harm to someone he loves. If this is this being’s idea of love, then I don’t want to be loved by this being knowing that at any moment I could be made an example of just to prove a point. No thank you. You could also ask, which being was perceived as more “evil” than the other in this story? Was it Satan (ignoring the assumptions)? Or was it God, who obliged a bet and allowed Satan to do what he did? I can’t seem to reconcile the omnibenevolence of this God and what the bible says he did and how it could be interpreted as something good that happened to Job.

This story is just one of many stories that don’t make sense in the context of a God described by the bible. It is also not the sole story that got me thinking to become an atheist or agnostic.

I NEVER Wanted MY Kids to be the Poor Kids

I didn’t have kids so they could suffer.  I didn’t have kids so they could watch their friends take piano and gymnastics lessons while they sat on the sidelines, too broke to pay for it.  I didn’t have kids to we could live in a camper with no space to ourselves.

I had kids to give them everything I never got:  lessons, experiences, vacations, trips, fun times, good memories, an easy life.

Yet, all they’ve had to far is hardship and turmoil.

I know they are still too young to care or notice much (the oldest being 6).  Still, I KNOW and that’s all that really matters.

My husband can’t find a job.  I can’t get my book accepted by an agent.  We have no idea where we will live in February.  Nothing.

My husband is angry.  He feels the same as I do.  He doesn’t want to move…AGAIN.  Who does?

He’s lost faith in God who doesn’t seem to answer and at times he’s lost the will to live.

Uncertainty is hard to face…especially since we’ve been through so much of it in the last couple of years.  We’ve declared bankruptcy, lost everything, moved several times chasing jobs that we thought would last…and at the same time left our hopes and dreams behind us in the wind.

Neither one of us really know how much more we can take.  Further, the weekend is here (meaning no calls from prospective employers) and it will be hard to get through.

Life is hard right now and I know we aren’t alone…but it sure does feel like it most of the time.

...it's back to work I go - Part 2 - the interview

So two interviews down and a couple more to go until I hope to get some offers for my “back to work” options.

It has been almost 4 years since I have had the task of getting up & ready for work. Hard to believe that it has been 4 years. :~) What have I been doing for the last 4 years is the first question that I have been asked. I answer proudly that I have had 2 more kids. Then the next question is “how will you handle a full-time position and your family”? Interesting question (posed by one woman and by one man). I wonder if that would have been asked if I had of been a man with a newborn applying for the position? You are right, it would have never been a consideration.

We still live in a world where Moms are assumed that their family takes precedent and that the men “go to the mine” day in and day out. My husband owns his own company and has a very flexible schedule. We have enlisted the help of a family friend to do our babysitting at our house when I do return to the workforce. Although leaving my 2 babies will be a huge adjustment for me, I did it before with my older 2. My 2nd baby was only 6 weeks old when I accepted a position that I had to train 3 hours aways for 2 months from my breastfed newborn, with my oldest child only being 1 1/2 and my husband working 40 hours a week. I think I am quite capable of handling a full-time job with a 2 1/2 yo and an 11 month old with the support  system I have and as I have done it before, I am quite sure that this will be a little easier just because of their age.

I do not blame the industry for this question as it still is a “boys club” but I still have to wonder why this is a question that I am expected to be able to answer. A double income generating family is much more prepared financially for more challenges and with 4 kids, that I hope to go to College or University, my income is going to be a valued addition to our welfare for the future.

The amount of work that I will do now will be equivalent to 2 full time jobs, yes. But one of those jobs I am paid financially and the other emotionally. What a fulfilling life. Busy, but fulfilling. Going back to work will make me have to count on my family to fill voids that they have not had to do for the last 4 years, but it will make them more responsible too. The challenge of going back to work is not the work, but the balance that is needed to keep your sanity. The time around family becomes much more cherished and love filled to make up for the time that I am not around to help them with homework, read them a book, make them their favourite snack or simply hug them when they fall and hurt themselves. It is a challenge that I am up for to ensure that they all have the financial resources to ensure they can ”be whatever they want to be”!

Time for myself will be lost in the shuffle, but isn’t that what retirement is for? If I do not return to work, then retirement may not be what I hope it to be…spoiling my grandchildren :)

I wish to be Darna

Darna

in times like this.

It all started with a feeling that I have a lot of things to do
…. with my life.

I am so busy that I cannot decide which to prioritize. I just hope I have two bodies which can do the work simultaneously.

I am heading the recruitment & training, doing OD at the same time in our company. It eats 12 hours of my day.

I am acting this Feb 2 in DLSU-CSB. I lack time for rehearsals and I don’t know how to ask permission from my boss to file leave on that day.

I will go to Taipei the next weekend. I don’t have VISA yet. Argh.

I got an invitation to attend in a meeting with the center for women’s group sometime this week.

I have a Job Fair this Saturday.

I still have things to settle in school before March 8. I don’t have free time.

I have gimmick tomorrow night with Judy and the gang.

My friends are inviting me to join them in Dumaguete Trip and I don’t know what to answer.

Tell me, how would I do all of these? Kill me NOW.

“Ding, ang bato! Kailangan ko ng maging si Darna”

For the meantime, I’ll just watch BOF to forget.

Grind, level, repeat

I got Dragoon to 59 today. *Cheer!* 1 more level and I can wear my epic hat. I probably won’t get to 60 this week, though, because the end of the week is pretty darn packed. For starters, I start my job this Monday, and have some pre-employment stuffs I need to get done; like a physical and getting my ID badge picture taken.

Also, I have to take my dog to the boarder’s for a screening. See, everyone’s going to be out of town-ish this weekend, so no one’s going to be able to take care of the dogs. The big dog, Midnight, will be staying at the vet’s. He’s old and I guess he’s due for some vaccinations, so my parents are killing 2 birds with one stone. My little dog, however, is young, doesn’t need any shots for several months, and has more energy than a nuclear power plant, so he’s staying at Alfie’s Poochie Playlot. I’m betting he’ll never want to leave.

On Friday I have my physical for my job at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, plus some other stuffs. But before that, if we can swing it, my mom’s trying to get a family photo taken. Joy. After the trip to Chicago for my pre-employment health screening/drug test/quality assessment, I’m going to head down to Champaign-Urbana for a weekend of gaming and friend-seeing. (It’s like sight-seeing, but the sights are all friends.) I’ll be busy pretty much every waking minute on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday evening I have to truck back home so I can go to bed early and get up for my first day at work. Badge photo taken bright and early at 7:30!

Job interview

I have a job interview today with Kenmore Ray  White real estate. It isn’t my dream job, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a job, and that’s all that counts at the moment. It’s an admin and reception job, but if the office at Moorooka is anything to go by, it will involve a lot more, and may have a possibility for advancement if I stay there that long.

I will still look to getting my teacher registration, however.

***

I am feeling kind of crap today, which may be the diet, or it may be the PMS. Either way, I hope I don’t screw up the interview by passing out.

3. Heather [3]

“How are you, girl?” Jake said as he walked over to Heather’s usual booth. It was a small booth that only sat two. Sometimes Heather’s mother, Bella, would meet her at Lila’s and then the two would share the booth and a meal or sometimes just a dessert. Tonight, though, Heather was alone as she slid gratefully into her regular spot.

“I’m great, Jake, just exhausted,” Heather smiled at him. “Yourself?”

“Fine, fine, all fine,” Jake’s eyes twinkled. “Love is in the air, and all that. You know.”

Heather knew. Vicariously, at least. She’d watched the romance, or dalliance or whatever it was, flourish between Jake and Bo over the last three weeks of beautiful summer evenings. She’d been friendly with Jake even before, but he had seemed so droopy, so sad and sort of lost. But then Bo joined Lila’s staff, and Heather couldn’t be happier for the change that had come over Jake.

“My sister’s going to come over some evening this week,” Jake went on. “Well, I haven’t exactly asked her to yet, but I’m going to. I think she’ll like this place – and you’ll like her, too. I’ll ask her to come in the evening so you can maybe meet her.”

“Sounds great, Jake! I didn’t know you had a sister.”

“Yeah, a twin. Her name’s Amanda. She goes to Valley U. So, the usual?”

Heather nodded, and Jake bustled towards the diner’s kitchen to get her hot-chocolate for her. She stretched back and looked around the small space. At this hour, it was usually still empty, but Heather knew that if she stayed for another half hour, the place would fill up. Downtown Hartscreek was a hopping scene, and there wasn’t a night of the week when an eclectic crowd wouldn’t appear, as if by magic, at Lila’s: there were young professionals, coming for a dessert after a dinner somewhere else, or maybe just meeting up for a meal after putting their children to bed; there were club-goers, dressed in bright colors and skin-tight materials, catching some protein before a long night of dancing and drinking; there were the punkers, stocking up on fries and milkshakes before heading to the latest underground show. Heather loved to take them all in as she sat there, savoring the taste of her hot drink as she sipped it down almost agonizingly slowly.

Tonight would be no different, she hoped, as she lay her chin in her hands and stared across the room to where she knew Jake would be coming out in a moment with that delicious hot chocolate in his hands.

ALERT...11 Clear Signs That The U.S. Economy Is Headed Into The Toilet...

The vast majority of the talking heads on television are still speaking of the current economic collapse as if it is a temporary “recession” that will soon be over. So far, the vast majority of the American people seem to believe this as well, although for many Americans there is a very deep gnawing in the pit of their stomachs that is telling them that there is something very, very wrong this time around. The truth is that the foundations of the U.S. economy have been destroyed by an orgy of government, corporate and individual debt that has gone on for decades. It was the greatest party in the history of the world, but now the party is over. The following are 11 signs from just this past month that show that the U.S. economy is headed into the toilet and will not be recovering….

#1) When even Wal-Mart is closing stores you know things are bad. Wal-Mart announced on Monday that it will close 10 money-losing Sam’s Club stores and will cut 1,500 jobs in order to reduce costs. So if even Wal-Mart has to shut down stores, what chance do other retailers have?

#2) Americans are going broke at a staggering pace. 1.41 million Americans filed for personal bankruptcy in 2009 – a 32 percent increase over 2008.

#3) American workers are working harder than ever and yet making less. After adjusting for inflation, pay for production and non-supervisory workers (80 percent of the private workforce) is 9% lower than it was in 1973. But those Americans who do still have jobs are the fortunate ones.

#4) Unemployment is absolutely exploding all over the United States. Minority groups have been hit particularly hard. For example, unemployment on many U.S. Indian reservations is over 80 percent.

#5) Unfortunately the employment situation is showing no signs of turning around. December was actually the worst month for U.S. unemployment since the so-called “Great Recession” began.

#6) So just how bad are things when compared to past recessions? During the 2001 recession, the U.S. economy lost 2% of its jobs and it took four years to get them back. This time the U.S. economy has lost more than 5% of its jobs and there is no sign that the bleeding of jobs will stop any time soon.

#7) Can you imagine trying to get your first job in this economic climate? Our young men and women either can’t get work or have given up on work altogether. The percentage of Americans 16 to 24 who have jobs is 13 percent lower than ten years ago.

#8) So where did all the jobs go? Over the past few decades we have allowed the corporate giants to ship mountains of American jobs overseas, and there are signs that this trend is only going to get worse. In fact, Princeton University economist Alan S. Blinder estimates that 22% to 29% of all current U.S. jobs will be offshorable within two decades. So get ready for even more of our jobs to be shipped off to Mexico, China and India.

#9) All of these job losses are leading to defaults on mortgages. Over the past couple of years we have seen the American Dream in reverse. According to a report that was just released, delinquent home loans at government-controlled mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac surged 20 percent from July through September.

#10) But that is nothing compared to what is coming. A massive “second wave” of mortgage defaults is getting ready to hit the U.S. economy starting in 2010. In fact, this “second wave” is so frightening that even 60 Minutes is reporting on it.

#11) Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has announced that it made a record profit of $46.1 billion in 2009. Apparently during this economic crisis it is a very good time to be a bankster.

Consultant

About a month after my old friend/boss left my old company (back in November), my old work crush left too. The only person who is still there with whom I have any emotional interest is my big sister from work, who took over for my friend/boss when he left.

Now that the “good” people have left (and some of the “not good” people were fired), my big sister at work had to hire a new salesperson. Unfortunately, almost a year after I left the sales department, I’m the only one who remembers how to do all the little tasks that the new person needs to learn. It makes sense actually; I trained everyone else, and now everyone else is no longer with the company.

My big sister from work emailed me earlier in the week to ask me a question about a task I used to do. After I gave her a detailed response, she replied asking if I could go into the office for half a day to help train the new salesperson. I would be a consultant for my old job. If it was anyone else asking (like, for example, my old boss who didn’t talk to me for the last six months of my employment), I probably would have said no immediately.

Lucky for her, my Thursdays are completely open this term. Tomorrow afternoon, I’m going back to work!

And yes, they’re paying me. My big sister from work offered me a rate that’s higher than when I was working there!

Work..

3.

7 and a half.

7.

That’s how many hours I’ve worked at my one job this week [so far]. I work 2-630 tomorrow. I worked at my other job on monday 1130-5. So that’s 5 and a half. Yes. That’s a lot of working [for me]. I have a headache.

I can’t wait until the weekend. Tomorrow is one month until Valentine’s Day!! Yeah. I start school this Wednesday coming up, the 20th, my 16-month anniversary. (That’s still crazy to me).

I’m reading a book called ”Dear John” now. It’s coming out in theaters on Feb 2. The preview made me sad. How do you think I will be watching the real movie? Geez. I know. But it’s so good so far. If it’s in the library, you should rent it out.

I’m very tired. I just wanted to let you guys know what was going on.

I love you.

I’ve got a JOB!!

I’ve got a JOB!! I’m staring tomorrow and it’s a sweet Gig. Except for the occasional garbage detail I am basically doing surveillance. I’m sitting at a desk looking at video monitors. I should stalk up on some Reese Peanut butter cups for snackage but not too many. I heard that white collar office jobs can make people put on the pounds. This job is right up my ally, I’m always watching videos anyway.

Long time no see?

Well, it seems I’ve been away a long time. Except I’ve not been away, just trying to concentrate on getting work, without much success. I had the chance of an interview last month, but was unable to get to the place. Firstly the car rental company re-allocated the car I’d already paid for (nice one Alamo, I still feel you’ve stolen from me). I tried to go by train to the interview and got to Euston station only to find that all trains were cancelled at that point (it was the Friday before the holidays when we were surprised by snow). The interview was re-arranged for Wednesday this week but guess what the snow came again and my chance of the interview went out the window.

Apart from that I’ve been working on my new website. It may be of use for Spanish speakers – enter in an English word eg “deep”, “useful”, or “bear” and various expressions will be displayed, next to their Spanish translation. Early days yet, so the database isn’t anywhere near comprehensive, but there are still quite a few words to look at.

So here I am.  38 years old.  It seems so odd to think of myself as “old” but let’s face it:  I’m not young any more.

I’m not exactly svelte anymore either.  Bean Sprout told me yesterday that I was “putting on a little weight” when I grabbed two blueberry muffins.  These weren’t the giant, cannibals-would-confuse-them-with-human-heads muffins.  Regular muffins.  He tried to make me feel better by saying at one point, he was up to 200 pounds.  Must be hell.

Beezlebubba threw a hissy fit over his passwords again.  There has to be a way for better user security, but how the hell did someone get to his point in life being absolutely clueless about the basics of using a computer?  I’ll bet Snowflake doesn’t have these problems.

Operation Organization: Clothing, Closets, and Shoes, oh my!

One of my 101 goals to complete in 1001 days is to spend concentrated time each month on organization.  I feel this unusual need to organize and simplify my life.  I am not a domesticated housewife by any means, but perhaps because I spend so much time here now I feel like I want control over my space.  Additionally, I think I have learned to live on a whole lot less and I don’t have the need for the excess  purchases from years ago.

Along with being an organizational project this will also be an emotional project for me.  I grew up with parents with a net worth over $1M, but we lived like paupers.  I bet I wore the same hand-me-down-shirt to school 2 out of 5 days because I didn’t have other options.  My jeans (as in singular pair of jeans) were always several inches too short.  I was lucky if I had one decent pair of sneakers.  My winter coat was always 5-10 years old, as most of my clothing options were because those were the cousins I would get hand-me-downs from.  When I was very young I didn’t know the difference.  But it is not a good thing to be different in anyway when you are an elementary aged child.

I can remember in about fifth grade being teased about my clothing by sixth graders in the hallways.   It made me conscious of the fact that my coat was ugly, my pants were ready for the flood, or that we were supposedly poor.

I began babysitting and most of my money went toward either clothing or shoes.  My first real job was when I was a sophomore in high school at a clothing store.  Do you see where there may have been some security issues with clothing? Letting go of excess clothing will restore some balance to my life. I  can contribute my “letting go” of objects such as clothing due to finally feeling comfortable in my lifestyle.  I think I can let go of a lot because I know that if I really want or need something I am financially secure enough to be able to purchase it or that I am smart enough to “make it work” as Tim Gunn from Project Runway would say.

Through a wordpress.com blog that I randomly happened upon a few nights ago I ran across a book review that subsequently resulted in a purchase from Barnes and Noble.  In the book Unclutter Your Life in One Week (2009), Erin Rooney Doland suggests starting your home organization projects in areas that you will see on a regular daily basis so can immediately appreciate the benefits of organization.   She suggests areas such as bedroom closets, work desks, or home entrances as great first organization projects.  If there is one major downfall of our home, it is the lack of adequate storage space.  Being truthful, it is also my lack of utilizing the space we currently have as efficiently as possible.

I am choosing to tackle my husband and my closet, clothing, and shoes as my first project.  Now that I no longer work outside of the home, I have a wordrobe of used clothing that could be donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army for someone who will use it, rather than it sit in a storage tote under my bed.  I will keep several key pieces of work clothing such as three suits, 3 shells, and maybe an expensive piece or two that I am not willing to part with.  Other than that, it is my goal to donate the rest of my work clothing.  Wish me luck!  This will be very difficult for me to let such a huge part of my wardrobe (and former life) go.

Casual clothing is another area that needs to be reevaluated.  I consider casual clothing as articles that are everyday or out to see friends or dinner.  Basically non-work clothing.  This area seems to be out of control because I have not changed sized since I stopped growing in high school.  That means I haven’t grown out of anything unless I have grown out of the style.  I am also sentimental and some outfits trigger memories of where I wore it or where I’ve been in the article of clothing.  Author Erin Rooney Doland made a great suggestion for letting go of emotional pieces.  She recommends taking a digital picture (and backing that up) of the emotional object.  It is true that what I like the most about certain pieces is the memories that they trigger and the same effect could be achieved by an electronic album especially when it comes to clothing.

Another note about my casual clothing is that I almost always go for key pieces or newer pieces.  There are so many old outfits I will never wear again simply because I know I have a better option.  It is time to let all those extra pieces go! I also hope to maintain a streamlined closet by following the one in, one out rule.  If I make a purchase of a new casual piece I expect to get rid of a piece in my closet.  That will be a toughie and I know I won’t always follow the rule, but I am going to give it a go!

I haven’t decided about workout clothing.  Here is a fact: I rarely work out.  But sometimes I do get on a health kick and give it a go for a week to a month.  This is an area I can’t make any promises.  But what I will do is take all keepers out of my main closet and  move those to the tote under the bed.   That seems like a reasonable compromise, right?

Shoes will be the hardest of all.  Almost all of my shoes are at the very least $100+ investments and it will be so difficult to part with those I haven’t worn in the past year.  Plus I have so many colors and styles that I don’t want to purge any pair that I feel I may regret.  There is something about a fabulous pair of heels that makes me feel like a million bucks, probably psychologically linked to my semi-damaged childhood.  Shallow, I know, but the truth none the less.  My goal is small but something I hope to acheive.  I want to part with 10 pairs tomorrow. My first thought was I would be lucky if I could get rid of 5.  But I thought back to my casual clothing; there is always a newer pair or a key pair that I almost always go for.  I need to let go of some of my shoes.  This will be hard but it will significantly organize and unclutter my home.

Now it is time for a good night’s sleep because I’ve quite the emotional task tomorrow.  I hope to report to you with news of success, and maybe even a downloaded photo of my new organized closet.

Blazing a Trail, Yee Haw!

Although I involved myself in some non-book work today, it hasn’t been far from my mind. In fact, I’ve put together a nice outline for the book proposal, if I do say so myself. Ha! It is turning into a wonderful experience. I love that with every word written, note taken, interview transcribed, chapters are springing to life. Authoring a book length work has turned into creating a series of essays that weave together and connect information to make up one larger body of work. As a short story and essay writer, as well as a former journalist, my training is such that I say a lot in as few words as possible, thus putting tremendous weight on each word, sentence, and paragraph. When Mike initially approached me about collaborating on Anything But Ordinary: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives,  I  thought this tightness would work against me; however, it is actually working to my advantage and is also keeping my voice and style in a comfortable place. Bonus!

I’ve divided the proposal into a few sections, each tackling a different aspect of the book. Again, this organization has made the work more pleasurable and less taxing. Seriously, the last thing a creative writer wants or needs is to follow a pre-fab proposal format. I have, of course, been influenced by Cricket Freeman’s article, “Nonfiction Book Proposals: Make Your Proposal Stand Out,” which  is found in the  2010 Guide to Literary Agents (19th Annual Edition), published by F+W Media, Inc. Ms. Freeman is very detailed and specific when discussing the changing trends in publishing, as well as how to put together a kick-butt proposal that goes the extra mile. Ultimately, that is my goal. I am not someone who does only what it takes to get by, I’m always running beyond the finish line. This trait has served me well in my personal and professional life.

Overall, I’d say this day was pretty great. I take pride in the fact that I have an organized creative process that allows me to avoid that mind-numbing paralysis that often happens to writers who are easily distracted and overwhelmed. Yay me!

I completely classify this as NOT A LEGITIMATE JOB. They even say right in the email in the last paragraph that this note is a legitimate offer for employment so what makes me think it isn’t?

Aside from the obvious fact that this is a make-money-at-home offer, I can’t check out the company unless I try to search the email address or the woman’s name who contacted me. And when I did Google her name and/or email address, I literally only received 3 results with little or no information indicating the person or the company contacting me.

Secondly, I wasn’t able to tell where she got my contact information. Perhaps if it was from a recommendation or a mutual colleague, I would have been much more inclined to respond. Buuuuut… She didn’t. So I’m not.

Final decision. Not Legit.

Coincidentally, I had a second job offer when I woke up this morning…

This particular job offer contained the web address of the company I was being asked to work for. He gave examples of my blog posts and explained why he thought I would be a great candidate for his company. His website was very plain but gave some credentials, a photo, and examples of where his work has been posted. He was fairly candid but also didn’t explain where he got my contact information.

It seemed potentially legitimate so I responded to his email, even though I’m not convinced that it is something golden at this point.

There are clear cut signs on what isn’t a legitimate company to work for, but it begins to slowly become a gray area from there. Just like a job seeker is offering recommendations to potential employers, companies that are start-ups looking for volunteer interns, such as this particular offer, needs to do the same. He obviously isn’t going to pay me, or if he is, it will be a very insignificant amount. He’s in need of my services just as I’m in need for a good job. Employers in this situation need to be just as candid as those seeking a good position at a good (legitimate) company.

Final decision. Maybe Legit. Find out more.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0.704

http://www.jsoftj.com/thumbnail/photos/832-250x250_avg-anti_virus-free-edition.jpg

http://programs.holyfile.com/upload/screenshot614-0.png

AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You’ll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. Only for users in the United States, ITRU is a business partnership with Identity Guard which provides “consumer identity theft solutions,” accessible only from the AVG toolbar in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The interface is nearly unchanged from the last version, and generally it’s easy to use. From the main window, though, you must double-click to get further information on any feature, whether virus scanning, LinkScanner settings, or updating. Streamlining this to one click would be helpful. A scheduling utility automates both scans and updates, while the upgrade ad at the screen’s bottom can be easily hidden using the Hide Notification button. When starting a scan, a slider makes it easy to jump between Slow, Automatic, and Fast scans: the faster the scan, the less comprehensive it is, so users should take advantage of the scan optimization that is recommended during installation to speed up that first scan. A progress meter for regular scans would’ve been useful, though. Should a virus create serious problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode.

The LinkScanner feature protects you from third-party code exploits before they load in your browser and for ranking search results. Annoyingly, when you install its optional toolbar, it commandeers your new-tab page, decidedly inappropriate behavior. The program doesn’t obviously tax your system when scanning or when running in the background, although CNET Labs determined that it will significantly slow down your system’s boot time, and slightly delay shutting down. AVG also detected some image files as threats, when two other scans decided they weren’t–we decided these were false positives. AVG might not be the fastest or the most effective free security option, but it still gets the job done and you’re better off with it.

Job Description

If you have a job, you probably have a job description. This allows your manager to keep you centered on the tasks which are vital to maintaining a mission-centric focus for your forward-looking organization. It is also useful when your manager wants to evaluate you, discipline you, or assign you a completely random task which is justified by the phrase “additional duties as required.” (Kind of like TV game shows where the points are tripled in the last round making all of the rounds that come before mere window dressing.)

We need job descriptions, though, because modern jobs are so complex. In the early days of humanity, the typical job description for a hunter/gatherer would have read:

  1. Hunt
  2. Gather

Unless, of course, the human resources cave had gotten wind of the fact that the hunter/gatherer group wasn’t following tribe policy in regards to using fully-formed, ISO 9000-compliant job descriptions. Then the manager over the hunter/gatherers would have had to get out his tablet and chisel and come up with something a little more robust.

Job Title: Hunter/Gatherer

Job Focus: Provide food for tribe members using accepted hunting and gathering techniques in a manner consistent with the standards established by industry norms.

Job Qualifications:

  1. Significant experience as a member of a tribe-sustaining hunter/gatherer team, preferably in a harsh climate.
  2. Proven record of accomplishment at killing medium-to-large game animals with primitive tools.
  3. Advanced knowledge of hunting and gathering techniques; Masters degree preferred but not required.

Job Duties:

  1. Communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the tribe including the Chief’s cave.
  2. Demonstrate effective teamwork skills with other members of the hunter/gatherer operating group to include working effectively in close quarters with stone-tipped spears and sharpened stone axes.
  3. Identify, develop and evaluate hunting strategy based on knowledge of established tribe objectives, regional characteristics, and dietary needs of tribe members.
  4. Coordinate and participate in the distribution of food to tribe members.
  5. Additional duties as assigned.

Under this description, the poor hunter/gatherer would be so busy communicating, demonstrating, identifying and coordinating that he’d never have time to actually get food for the tribe. When he sat down with his manager — the Director of Tribal Resource Gathering and Dissemination — the conversation wouldn’t go well.

“Well Thag,” the Director of Tribal Resource Gathering and Dissemination would say, “You missed your quarterly target for the total amount of food gathered for the tribe. Can you explain that?”

Thag would think, Ugh! How could he possibly be expected to find time to hunt and gather and serve on the Tribal Color Scheme Steering Committee, Chair the Standards Compliance Team and head up the intra-cave softball tournament. Besides, didn’t upper management understand that someone with his skills and talents would be severely underutilized as a mere hunter/gatherer?

Had early humans actually used modern job descriptions, mankind would probably have starved to death centuries ago. Womankind, on the other hand, would have seen that mankind was being aggressively stupid and would have solved the problem herself. Most likely, mankind probably would have included her accomplishments in the quarterly report, but at least the tribe would have gotten fed.

Another reason the ancients didn’t need job descriptions is because they didn’t have to worry about salary and benefits. Do you think that the guys who built the pyramids had health insurance and a pension plan? A typical job description for them would probably have included phrases like “must be able to shoulder heavy loads while being whipped repeatedly,” “must be skilled at chiseling stone,” and “additional duties as required.”

The salary and benefits part would have said, “all meals provided by Pharaoh, no special diets permitted,” “living space in slave quarters provided free of charge,” and “cost of drinking water will be deducted from the employee’s salary.”

Fortunately, in these more enlightened times, salary and benefits statements tend to be along the lines of “compensation commensurate with employee qualifications,” “generous travel allowance for qualified applicants,” and “all employees are expected to contribute to the office coffee fund.”

The one thing you’re not likely to find in a modern job description is a truly honest picture of what your job will be like. Let’s say that you work as an administrative assistant. Your job description will probably be full of phrases like “create and modify documents using standard office software,” “coordinate the manager’s schedule,” “assist in implementation of company policy,” and “additional duties as required.” In truth, you’ll find yourself “writing memos for the boss when he gets too busy to do it himself,” “covering for the boss when he’s late … again,” “enforcing company rules even when they don’t make sense to you,” and “pretty much holding the company together with your bare hands.”

Job descriptions that honest are tough to come by. Which is probably why we don’t have job descriptions for family members. After all, who’d ever want to be a parent if they really understood what it involved.

Job Focus: Provide food, shelter, love and guidance for one or more young humans for a period of not less than eighteen years.

Job Qualifications:

  1. Ability to look at random blobs of finger paint, crayon or other artistic media and discern that the purple blob is Daddy and the yellow blob is Mommy.
  2. Ability to make appropriately sympathetic noises for every skinned knee and bruised elbow.
  3. Ability to remain calm and supportive in the face of genuine injuries including bleeding head wounds and compound fractures.
  4. Ability to endure school plays, concerts and recitals in which your child is clearly the only one with talent.
  5. Ability to love your children enough to let them go when the job is finished.

As for salary and benefits … parenting is a job you pay to do, but the benefits speak for themselves.
