bright things

Dear Reader. I’ve settled down with a good strong cup of earl grey to write to you. And it’s high time that I did. I had been writing under a real name rather sporadically and, due to the embarassment and guilt that ensues from writing honestly under one’s real name, I have decided to pack it in. That way of blogging never really suited me anyway. I prefer to casually reinvent myself now and then, and blogging under one’s real name doesn’t really allow for such a pasttime. And all young women, with any creative sense, like to reinvent themselves – clothing the most elementary form. Sometimes I go to work as a young maiden, a flower pattern somewhere adorning my waisted attire, my hair in curls and brought up to the crown at the front. Sometimes I prefer to assert my femininity with more authority than ballet shoes will allow. Cue the knee high leather boots. These allow for my darker interests to emerge, every woman needs to engage with her gothic from time to time. The thrust of this introduction is quickly waning, back to the point, the point.

Importantly, this will be a weave of fact and fiction. Let me, dear reader, run away imaginatively at times and twist my characters into new and more colourful realms. But I shan’t tell you when the fact ends and the fiction begins. That would be absurd.

I don’t care for themes or focussing on topics much. I’m a generalist. A master of all and jack of none, when I wake up in a particularly confident mood that is. So, apologies to the irritating journalists and branding consultants, but I shan’t be marketing this blog with any fervour or tenacity. It will be whimsical and all over the place. But hell, it will not be sporadic.

If it is, then message me and call me a satsuma.

One that is half-eaten, forgotten about and begun to dry out a little. Rather unpleasant.

It’s the 31st of December 2009 and I have high hopes for the new year. And it shall be full of bright things. I’m currently listening to ballet music, some tchaikovsky and prokoviev, and I am hoping that the coming year will be as bouyant in it’s ability to surprise and delight me as a dancer.

I should say, I have three main objectives and two secret and not so secret objectives. a. meet new people and b. attend more parties and c. have fun at those parties without ever saying so.  If us young things are ever to follow the superb example of the vile bodies of Waugh, Mitford and Fitzgerald, we must continue to seek out ’splendid occasions’, go on adventures and drink a great deal. Yes? Tonight I’m packing a bottle of martini and some mixers firmly into my handbag to share later on with girlfriends, as a prelude to a houseparty of some sort. Always best to leave these things in the air, plans nice and open and spontaneous. If only I knew that when I was 18 and too desperate to have grown-up fun. If only. I might have avoided the anti-climax that ensues from ‘planned fun’. Deary me.

The two secret objectives are of course very predictable. New job and new man. This could also take the form of a promotion and a lover. To be frank, I’d take either.Either that is, not all four. The problem is, and of course there is a problem, that I am too ambitious and too choosy for my own good. I know. So keen to re-invent myself that I fear a job and a man could, dare I say it, define me. Oh!  It’s my own darned fault.

Since moving to the Great London Town, I have certainly been meeting more of the opposite sex but they tend to appear in a rather sad state. They are all in the mid/late twenty range where youthful hopes and dreams are waning, and they think a steady woman and drink are the answer to this sad realisation. I’m a bit tired of being the saving grace, the angel to heal the broken man. I want someone who’s fixed thank you, or believes he is and then at least I could tease him about it.

Moving on. I’ve just finished reading Evenlyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies today which was raucous romp of a read. Just divine, as those vile bodies would say. Favourite quotation:

“Darkness fell during the drive back. It took an hour to reach the town. Adam and Miles and Archie Schwert did not talk much. The effects of their drinks had now entered on that secondary stage, vivdly described in termperance handbooks, when the momentary illusion of well-being and exhileration gives place to melancholy, indegestion and moral decay”.

Quite. I imagine I’ll reach that secondary stage at some point in the wee hours of tomorrow morning, and I won’t be chuckling then as I am now.

With love,

Violet

The Bible: Fancy Plans Edition Vol. 5

The Bible is full of parables and stories that teach us valuable lessons through the suffering of others. Perhaps no story teaches us more than the story of Job. It teaches us that God toys with his creation and falls victim to a manipulative and bitchy Satan too easily.

Meet Job: an all-around good guy who gets his ass (and asses) handed to him during a supernatural game of Truth-or-Dare.

Previous blasphelarious (thanks, shearviscosity!) translations available here:
The Bible: Fancy Plans Edition Archive

Job's friends interrupt his "8-Minute Abs" session with suggestions that he up his reps; curse God; die.

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. The neighbors hated him. With a passion. Especially since he kept them up late at night, eschewing evil, often with his mouth open.

2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. Like in that movie, Three Brides for Seven Brothers, which was a big hit in West Virginia and smaller cults worldwide.

3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east. So not only was he perfect and upright, but he had a metric shitload of stuff, including some of the best ass around. God. I’m sick of him already.

4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. Because they all had their own houses, what with their filthy rich dad and there was always enough mutton and camel and ass to go around.

5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually, hedging his bets to stave off any unwarranted judgement from God. (FORESHADOWING) This generally took him the better part of the week, which meant that he was at least three days behind by Tuesday and by Friday it was last winter.

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. Right up there on the list of reasons why God cast out Satan: constant gatecrashing. He also mentioned something about his “bogarting” of joints and never having any “stash” of his own. Plus he once peed in the linen closet.

In this tangentially-related etching, Job and unknown others discuss the pros and cons of cursing God; dying.

7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. I’m just passing through, dawg. No need to get all uptight.

8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Hast thou also considered his fine sons and daughters, who have GPAs in the upper 4’s and multiple extracurricular activities? Hast thou also not seen his annual food drive and UNICEF cans? And his organ donor card?

9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast thou not laid thine “pimp hand” down like thou did to thy servant Jonah a few chapters from now?

10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Why shouldst he bitch, when thou hooketh him up constantly?

11 But put forth thine pimp hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. Seriously. I bet I can get the F-bomb out of him.

12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. Because I am a vengeful and wrathful God. And I’m a sucker for playing the spread and looking like a big man in front of the demons. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and mentally counted his winnings. (Which were not monetary, thus making the whole “playing the spread” thing irrelevant.)

13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house. This would be a day that ended in “y.”

14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them. Because they’re lazy asses. The oxen are starting to complain that someone should “write those asses up.” Anyway… that’s not the important part...

15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. So… don’t worry about the write-ups. The problem seems to have solved itself. Although we will need to hire some new servants…

Subtitled "Job, Shut the Fuck Up or Get the Fuck Out!"

16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. I mean, I think it was Godfire. I was enjoying a post-sheep banging cigarette and I think I dozed off. Next thing I know, it’s like a Fiery Furnace (self-referential!) out there, only with an awful “burning mattress” smell.

17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. Worst Lollapalooza ever. Three bands. Slain servants. The headliner was Bush. ClearChannel isn’t issuing refunds and I left my Camels in my other ironic t-shirt.

18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house. You know, ’cause it’s a day that ends with “y”? And they’re known lushes?

19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. I told them to make it out of brick, but no one listens to old Gerald. Not until he’s the last guy standing.

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, (One Mantle: available month-to-month. 350 shekel deposit. No dogs.)

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. To be honest, I liked the LORD better when he was giving, but what can you do? He also liketh the taking. Perhaps too much.

22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. (God, feeling obligated by his massive screwing of Job, agreed to pick up the lease on the mantle and signed a 12-month agreement. Job appreciated this gesture and threw in a new flatscreen TV during God’s six-month extension.)

thoughts?

I was thinking about stupid things today.

Like why would an apartment complex install high-maintenance, easily stained carpet instead of cheap linoleum or laminate. Maybe so they have a valid reason not to return my deposit. Or because it’s slightly less expensive. Who knows.

I know I have made these type of lists before, but I enjoy them.

Serving tables gives you an entirely new opinion of people. Sometimes bad, sometimes good. Mostly bad.

Dear customers,

1. I hate it when you are  on the cell phone and hold your finger up while mouthing the words “one minute.” Then take 5 more minutes on the phone while I wait, watching from a distance for you to hang up. When you finally do, I come over to take your order and you act irritated, like I’ve taken to long to greet you.

2. I hate it when you are so nice and friendly the entire time, then tip me $2.00 on $2o.00.

3. I hate it when you don’t complain at all, and seem happy, then when my manager visits your table, you make a comment which to you seems offhanded, but I get in trouble because of what you said.

4.  I hate it when you mispronounce things on the menu, and STILL mispronounce it once I or someone at your table corrects you. It’s like some kind of willful ignorance.

5. I hate when you let your children have free roam of the restaurant.

6. I hate when you prance in with your perfect husband, your Prada bag, your Affliction shirt, and your Coach sunglasses yet can’t afford to tip me 20% even when I treat you like the royalty you think you are.

7. I hate when you need something every time I pass the table. You are annoying.

8. I hate when you shred paper items all over the table. I hate cleaning up tiny bits of straws and sugar packets because you’re a nervous nelly.

9. I hate when you try to tell me about Jesus.

10. I hate when you teenagers come in and barely manage to stop giggling and chatting long enough to tell me you want the kids meal. Then you need me to refill your coke every 5 minutes and at the end say “keep the change,” attempting to tip me, even though the change is less than a dollar.

I wish that writing about the good things that people do was more fun. Those occurrences are too rare, for one, and I feel like I would vomit from typing 10 “Chicken Soup for the Server’s Soul” moments.

I just don’t have it in me to enjoy uplifting conversation. It’s a huge downfall.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. Don’t drive drunk on New Year’s Eve, okay?

Setting Standards

Having standards is not enough. They must be the correct standards. By correct means not too low, not too high. If you set them too low you will lose productivity; valuable resources will be wasted. Low standards are also demotivating. Challenge and job satisfaction go hand in hand. When standards are too low people become sloppy in their work. When they can do their jobs with their eyes closed, their attention is lost and needless errors are made.

Standards that are too high are a problem as well. When standards are unrealistically high, the manager has no yardstick for determining how well the people performed. The standard is meaningless. Standards that are too high are also demotivating. If people know that the standards are impossible, they will reason “Why try at all? We can’t reach them anyway.” The standards become a source of frustration. If people consistently strive to meet the standards without success, they will feel like failures which will eventually affect their morale and performance.

The goal is to set standards high enough so that people have to work exceptionally hard to reach them and low enough so that they are attainable.

the broken road

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

The journey is difficult. There is nothing easy about it. I mean my journey has been semi hard. But when I hear and think about other people’s testimonies… OH MY DANG!!!!!  Sometimes it’s like … why God…? Other times it’s like … oh my dang a lang God! This is ridic! What the heck is your plan?!?…

Either way… it isn’t easy. It’s really hard when you’re like

… okay…this hurts… what’s your answer God?…

….okay God. it still hurts… it’s been a long time… will you please answer me?

…. dude. God. mas rapido por favor. what the heck is going on?!?

But it’s the right road. We’re diamonds being purified. He brings out beauty from the ashes. And makes us as gold purified as these flames. He never said it’d be easy. But we deserve hell. I’d rather keep going on with this… than the alternative… just saying. God gives us a relationship through this all. God is with us through all of this. God is still God. Through ALL of this.

When we can’t hold on anymore, He carries us. He is glorified in our weakness. He gets glory when we fall short.

I don’t want to live a lie. I don’t want to live alone. I want to live Life.

He remembers us. Even when we can’t see Him. Even when we can’t hear His voice. Even when we can’t feel His presence. He’s our anchor. I don’t want to wear masks to hide what I’m feeling. The storms raging in my soul don’t have to be covered up. Because He is glorified in them. We can be us. We can be real. We don’t have to wear a happy mask. We can be honest. We don’t have to act like everything is alright when it so isn’t. I want His Joy.

He takes away our yesterday chains. Our today chains. And any future chains that might entangle us. He purifies us after we walk this really difficult road. He blesses us with Himself. It’s so worth it. So dang worth it.

Yet so dang difficult to walk through these storms. But we ain’t alone. Ever. We are never alone.

I choose difficulty. I choose the pits with the lions on the snowy days. That’s when God works His miracles.

struggle-roaded with joy,

Club XXXmas Party

On the 19th it was the club Christmas party. There were 8 of us on, including Emma Butt and Samara Sands. We had a local radio DJ come in to do the disco and we had a caterer do the buffet. The new cinema room was open, as was the BDSM playroom. I love the cinema room – it’s tiered with porn projected life-size onto the wall. The two upstairs gangbang rooms now had sparkly starlight headboards fitted and new red lightbulbs in the chandeliers. There was tinsel everywhere and we were all in our sexiest Miss Santa outfits.

The party started with us all dancing as alluringly as possible in the lounge and then 6 of us leading the men off to 3 separate locations for the start of the gangbang. There was a raffle all night where the two winners would win 15 minutes 1on1 anal. I was one of the first 6 girls on the beds. And, because we’d had to dance, I was already drunk. I can’t dance sober. I’d had to drink some of Samara’s vodka and then a pint of white wine before I could even start to move like I was a sex goddess not a groovy granny. So when it came to guys fucking me I’m sure they were getting away with being far rougher than normal because I was pretty much numb to their cocks penetrating me deeply!

By the time it got to midnight with an hour and a half left to go we were all, literally, well and truly fucked. We’d used lube right from the start because we knew it was gonna be a long night but our pussies were still closing up. They were telling us ‘no entry’ and we had to listen. So when it got to the buffet we decided we’d all try to make the break a bit longer than it should have been! We succeeded without a single word from the management which bought our dying vaginas a little time.

For the last spurt (as it were) of the night, Emma and I hid upstairs chatting with clients for as long as possible. When slowly other girls were added to our number we all went downstairs and starting giving lapdances instead of shags. When the guys asked us to go to the bed, we make up our own rules and said, ‘blowjobs only’. We felt quite powerful, with us in charge and not the management, and we felt proud to have survived so long being fucked by every type of cock you can imagine. We definitely deserved our £200 each… it made it all worthwhile!

Merry Christmas to you all xx

Adventures in Temping

Upon my latest adventure in unemployment I set about seeking temporary work. I signed up with six local staffing agencies, and even a few national agencies with no local offices, in order to secure a temporary assignment.

Nearly one month after losing my job I eagerly took the opportunity to work for one week. You read that right. The assignment was only one week long and was, in the words of the person I served at the client company, a s#!t job. This assignment entailed filing for an Accountant at a construction company. My first task was to file about six month’s worth of documents for the current year. Next, I cleared out those files and prepared them for storage. I then prepared files for the new year. It doesn’t sound like much but these files were for hundreds of vendors, clients, and employees. My fingers chapped and bled from digging through files, papers, and putting together storage boxes. File cuts are the worst. I don’t know how many band-aids I went through that week.

While I am sure this assignment sounds unsavory it actually was kind of nice. Allison, the Accountant I was assisting, was grateful for my help. She asked me about my resume and told me that she would try to convince the owner of the company to bring me on permanently as a Project Assistant. The Project Assistant position would assist the four Project Managers as well as the Accountant. The company had suffered a lay-off six months prior but Allison was sure she could persuade the owner to see the utility of hiring a new assistant. I was excited at the prospect and left the assignment at the end of that week confident that I did a great job and, if The Powers That Be would agree, I might just get a new permanent full-time job.

The Powers That Be disagreed and I never heard from that company again. The staffing agency was pleased with the recommendation that they gave me, though.

Five months later another staffing agency secured for me yet another one week assignment. This assignment was as a Receptionist for an office-space rental company – the kind that rents office space to self-employed business persons and small businesses that cannot afford a typical office space arrangement. Also, there was the possibility that the assignment could extend to three months while another Receptionist was on a short-term medical leave.

Again, the people I served were very pleasant and the days were busy. I hadn’t been a Receptionist for seven years so it was challenging trying to keep up with the phones and greet guests at the same time. My supervisor at this assignment helped me reformat my resume to make it more effective and even advised me which clients to leave it with. We exchanged email addresses and became Facebook friends. Bad luck struck again, though. The company announced cuts and my assignment was not extended. I still keep in touch with the supervisor from time to time.

Six months after that assignment, another agency offered me a position that would last at least one month. This was a database clean-up assignment, a task I thoroughly enjoy. I was really glad for this assignment as it would be a job that I considered fun and it was for a longer term. The first week was wonderful. I came down with what turned out to be the swine flu and was dismissed from the assignment. People at the client company were afraid that I might have infected the entire office and requested that I be replaced, even though I had recovered and they were impressed with my job performance. In truth, swine flu was the only strain of the flu going around at that time and everyone everywhere was at risk. You were at risk going to the grocery store. But this company had deemed me Swine Mary and I lost out once again. The staffing agency, however, agreed that the client company had overreacted but there was nothing they could do.

Two weeks ago this same staffing agency called me with another temporary opportunity. This assignment entailed assisting a trucking company just five minutes from my house. The money is less than the other assignments I’d completed but it is close to home and the term is indefinite. This company is aware that I am waiting to hear about a permanent opportunity for which I had interviewed prior to accepting this assignment but the permanent opportunity is not guaranteed.

This temporary assignment is by far the best temp opportunity I have had in the past year. The staff are wonderful people, always telling me what a good job I am doing. Heck, they downright spoil me, giving me Christmas presents when they were not obligated to do so. They have already expressed an interest in taking me on permanently but I really want to see what comes of that other opportunity. I do believe that, if the other job opportunity falls through, I may already be in the best situation. In comparison to the classified ads I have recently viewed, I definitely am in the best place for me.

One common denominator shared by all of these temporary jobs is that I am working below my skill level. There is no challenge. Under normal circumstances that would be discouraging, but our current economic conditions are not normal circumstances. Corporate executives and people with advanced degrees are having to accept temporary or even permanent positions that are technically beneath their experience. But there are families to support and bills to be paid. Employers who are actively hiring are asking more from candidates and giving less in return. Just today I read an ad for an Executive Assistant position that matched my resume to the letter with one caveat – BACHELOR DEGREE IN ENGLISH REQUIRED! I decided not to apply for that position.

The moral of my story, kids, is that temporary work may be difficult to come by these days but no opportunity should be overlooked. My personal formula for accepting a temporary assignment is this: more $ than unemployment + short commute = accept the job. That is what I am doing now. I take pride in my work whatever it is and wherever it happens to be and every company I have served has been satisfied with my performance.

And, you never know, a temporary assignment that does not quite match your skill level just may lead to a permanent opportunity you normally would have overlooked. One can hope!

The Treasuries of Snow

The snow event of the decade has sent Christmas shoppers retreating to the safety of their homes.  My husband and 13-year old daughter could not resist the steep snowy slope outside, now covered with a foot of new-fallen snow.  I’ve chosen to retire to the couch with my laptop, bible, and warm steaming cup of coffee (with Belgian Toffee creamer …ahh!)

The circumstances of the day reminded me of a scripture that a Facebook friend (Brad) brought up a week ago about the treasuries of snow.  Job 38 is a recorded conversation between God and Job.  It begins with God questioning Job from a whirlwind.  “Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.”  What ensues is a revelation of some of the marvels of Father’s grand creation.

Verses 22-23 read, “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle?”  According to the writings of Enoch, the Treasuries (or armories) of Snow have angelic guardians who oversee their dispersals.

Washington D.C. is also under a hazardous weather outlook and a winter storm warning.  The brunt of the storm is focused on the District and parts of Northern Virginia who will see anywhere from 14-22 inches by the time the storm has passed.  Coincidentally, CNN.com just posted this headline, “Senate Democrats win over key holdouts to reach 60 votes on reform bill.”  The health care bill has been the subject of closed-door negotiations, today, between liberal and moderate Democrats.  The main hold-out? Taxpayer-funded abortions.  It appears the compromise that won the final vote needed for passing, was to require states to offer at least one plan that excludes abortion coverage.

The CNN article reads, “In addition, under national plans that would be administered by the Office of Personnel Management, there has to be, if a state chooses those, at least one that does not offer abortion coverage.”

The Senate insisted on meeting today, in spite of the treacherous atmospheric conditions.  There are a number of issues remaining to be voted on  clearing the path for a health-care vote before Christmas break.  It would seem Senate Dems are hell-bent on forcing this vote, without the due process of full disclosure and review.  If it were a righteous bill, with righteous intentions, it would not be invented in darkness behind closed doors.

About the snow, Washington D.C. hasn’t seen 2 feet of snow in one storm since 1922.  It is certainly worth noting.

pass you by

“For we were born only yesterday and know nothing,
and our days on earth are but a shadow.”

Job 8:9

I learned something special tonight. Time is short, don’t let the presence of greatness pass you by. Tonight our church ran our annual Christmas Celebration Night and our speaker shared with us an endearing story. The story was of Joshua Bell, a world-renown violinist who became a busker for a day at a busy train station. Normally, people would pay up to $150 for tickets to watch him play in concert. That day, while busking, he only made $33. Apparently, people were too busy and too preoccupied with their lives that they just continued on walking, even though there was the arguably the world’s best violinist playing before them. Out of the many hours of him performing, only one girl stopped and recognised who he was and stood there in full appreciation.

This is very much a simple reflection of our lives and God. We are so busy, in the same way as the hundreds of people’s lives passing through a train station. We have bills to pay, meetings to go to, work to finish. We are so busy that we sometimes walk past the fact that God is with us. We are so busy that we forget to spend time in His majesty. We are so busy that we cannot hear Him speaking to us through His Word. We are so busy that we don’t experience the fellowship that He blesses us through other Christians. We are so busy, we just pass by the presence of God.

Tonight was a fantastic night. It was the build up and cumulation of a month of hard work. Tonight, I saw laughter and happiness in everyone who participated in our Christmas Celebration Night – actors, singers, musicians, stagehands, welcoming teams. It was a beautiful sight to see so many of us, young in age, pleasantly and radiantly serving God and each other. The sad thing was, some people missed out.

Some people were so busy with their lives that they did not see the majesty in serving Him. They let these times pass them by. It was a time of encouragement, a time of coming together, a time of corporate service to God. It was a time of celebration, reflection and fellowship. It was a time where we all loved to serve Him and was blessed as a family from it. Yet, some people missed out.

This Christmas, I do not want to let these times pass me by. I want to be strong in my relationship with God and I want to share that with the ones I hold dearest to me. And I want all of my Christian family to experience that to – like we did tonight. Great work everyone! By God’s strength and providence, we did it – for Christ, because of Christ and to Christ always! We didn’t pass Him by tonight.

Video Presentations

logo

Resumes are a tool used by the job seekers to provide a summary of their past experiences, achievements and the capabilities of an individual that will allow the person to qualify for a particular job vacancy, within an organization. In the recent era, when promptness and compactness is the name of the game, the managers too do not like investing most of their time in sifting and screening the many resumes they receive, from all over the country or even the world in some cases.

That is why the current trend of video presentations being used as video resumes is fast gaining popularity and acceptability in the corporate world. This method is very popular among the youth of today, who are opting to harness the digital technology to develop impressive resumes for themselves that will help them get ahead in their professional lives. Though it is a relevantly new idea, yet its potency cannot be denied and it has significantly made its mark in the corporate sector, where the managers can finally find freedom from sifting through the stack of papers called resumes.

A good personal presentation promises to leave a positive impression on the employers, who will be forced to take action accordingly. Rather than sticking to the formats of a resume and searching for the relevant keywords to add zing to them, the job seekers will have an opportunity to actually prepare and present themselves, in the comfortable environment of their homes or elsewhere. This, on the hand will allow the managers to gauge the job seeker’s personality type and observe their confidence level and other related aspects easily. One can also choose to provide their video presentations in combination with the traditional resumes, to add dimension and clarity of expression, to make themselves stand apart from the crowd.

Video presentation is a powerful tool, which one can choose to demonstrate their intellect and enthusiasm. One can opt to get their shoot done from a professional agency or can even shoot it themselves with the help of the digital cameras. When developing the personal video presentations, always invest time in preparation and know your strengths and weaknesses. Market your skills and emphasize on how the organization can benefit from it.

Structure an enthusiastic opening to entail the compact summary of your education and the work history relevant to the nature of the job. Do not digress, as your audience, which is your employer may lose interest in what you have to say. Rehearse well before actually recording the shoot and make sure that your speech is clear, confident and precise. Video presentations are a great way to assess the potential candidates and respond to the recruitment process in a more timely fashion. For more information please visit. http://www.applyandgo.com/

Career Tip 3

In a job landscape where employers are just as likely to Google as they are to interview, it is important to create a search friendly career profile. You are your own brand.  Like a brand, you must not only perfect your product but also market it.

The economic recovery is moving at a slower pace than anyone expected and every job is a potential pot of gold. For every one position open there are potentially 20-100 applicants. What is a job seeker to do?

Below are few ideas on getting out there where employers can find you.

Submit articles to publications in your field. Professional magazines and journals are always a good place to showcase your writing and talent. Ensure that your topics are well researched and of current interest. Give yourself the freedom to explore topics from a unique prospective and be prepared to explain how your article will be different from previous authors. Writing for these organizations adds an extra sense of expertise to your portfolio. As well, you may tap into a network that may have been closed off to you before.

Volunteer for a Local Charity or Professional Group Volunteering is a great way to fill in time gaps on your resume. Seek volunteer positions that are relevant to the type of work you want to pursue. If you have a particular skill ask about being able to offer free workshops or seminars. This provides you with an opportunity to keep your skills fresh while helping others. Volunteer organizations also provide leadership opportunities. One day you could be a volunteer, the next treasurer or board member.

Attend Professional Events This should be a no-brainer. However, most job seekers rarely attend the meaningful events in their community. Events sponsored by local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, and other professional societies are the prime place to rub elbows with the HIRERS. Attending these events lets employers know that you have your finger on the pulse of your industry and that you are able to handle yourself around other industry professionals.

Public Speaking Offering yourself as a free motivational speaker can do wonders for your professional profile. Start by speaking at local school career days and other community events. As your reputation spreads, begin to offer your speaking services to more industry specific organizations. Who knows you may be asked to join a Speakers Bureau.

Start a Blog, Online Newsletter, or Publication This has the easiest way to get noticed online. Online publications are easy for employers to search for online. They also provide a better look at you as a person and potential employee. Ensure that your online publication is well written, proofread, and of current industry interest. No employer wants to read about your daily eating habits or what is grinding your gears. Monitor your online presence to ensure that there is nothing there that would turn off a potential employer

Dim Sum

My Boss left me in the front of dim sums mountain and I think that was totally immoral!

Immoral as in it was so tempting to eat all those delicious foods right away but I need to hold that crazy desire in order to respect my Boss, guess I would be such an impolite person if I insisted to eat at that really time.

I hate the awkward situation when I stared those dim sums like I have never eaten for forever…. Those were mouth waterly…  Really.

Anyway… The dim sums were totally awesome!

Am I falling in love to my new job? Still unsure…

Btw, did I tell you that I have my confession today? Yea, surprisingly I did!

All Fucked UP!!!!!

Have you ever felt that feeling of being able to fulfill your dreams little by little? That feeling of being hired for a job and being able to work for a company that says they really do, “care for their employees…”? And, did you ever feel like you we’re betrayed and somewhat abandoned?

We did, many of us did! I’m just one of the few who we’re really affected. Affected in the sense that you we’re aiming for the sky thinking that if ever you fall, you’ll fall on the roof. But, we didn’t! We fell hard! So hard, right onto the ground!! We never thought this things would happen. We really felt we we’re secured, but we weren’t. We we’re totally geared up for the war but we lost the battle without having the chance to fight for what we have and to fight for what we believe we can do for that F****N’ COMPANY.

We we’re right there, we we’re enjoying, I suppose. We we’re doing the best we can for our jobs and for our superiors and co-workers!! We we’re right there. But all of the things that we worked hard for, it all disappeared in a blink of an eye. All the frustrations, all the depressions and all the hard works we put up, it was all put to waste!! EVERYTHING!!!! Including what we feel!! We we’re drenched, drenched in tears, I was!!

I bet you’d exactly feel the same, the same way we all felt!!! If you we’re sent to have a “TWO WEEK OFF WITHOUT PAY…” All the hearsay, a day before the DAMNATION was given to us, was sugar coated!! Sugar coated in a sense that, the program wasn’t closing and all! That the program will stay! But it wasn’t!!!!! It was not!!! That’s not the same assurance that we we’re given the following day!!

The following day, after all the DAMN sugar coating. They all hate to say it but they have to because the program’s at stake. We have to go to a two week vacation without pay for the program to stay!! Is that fair? It’s not a fair labor practice. And let’s say it’s not for labor, just for us, the employees. Isn’t it unfair? When you know very well that you’re doing your best, for the job!! Isn’t it? I believe it is!! All of us gets frustrated and really cries whenever a shift ends and we haven’t made a SALE. Even just a single sale. Our TL’s know that, the Shift manager knows that, even the Operations Manager knows that. They all know very well, how sad and depressed we get whenever we don’t meet their expectations.

We we’re really trying, oh! Not trying, we we’re actually doing our very best, up to the last ounce of sweat we have, we we’re really doing our best. Haven’t they seen that? Weren’t they moved by that?! Do we really have to suffer this!! Do we really have to lose our jobs for others to stay?! Won’t we get that same treatment? That very same treatment they’ve given to others?

We go to work everyday! With all the disputes and the salary not that competitive! We go to work everyday, with all the frustrations and depressions. Frustrations and depressions building up everyday, but we value our jobs, our families, so we still go to work. All that sacrifice! Don’t they see the value of it!!!! Don’t they!!!

We will never go back to that stupid company, ever!!! For all those who will have the chance to read this article, take it as an advice from the “EXPERIENCED” employees of Stream – Etelecare! Look for a more stable company that will compensate for your needs and give you benefits that you’ll really benefit from and a company that will give you competitive salaries!!! Don’t waste your time sticking to this kind of company that doesn’t value their employees’ hard works!!

As the Beach Boys would Say, "Be True to Your School"

Congratulations to the first batch of new applicants who have been admitted to Bates!

Looking back on the college process in high school, I remember how grueling the experience can be. However, now that I work at the Office of Student Financial Services, I had never realized it’s quite hectic up here on our end as well. Since it’s early decision season (the first round), the office transforms into a sort of a miniature Times Square, with frantic parents calling at least every six minutes to ask if we’ve received their W-2 statements while the staff bustles around on headsets attempting to restore the calm.

The office on a quiet Friday afternoon.

If you have any financial-related questions, please visit: http://home.bates.edu/admissions-tour/costs-aid/. (We’d be more than thrilled to assist you!) Financial aid is another reason that prompted me to apply to Bates early decision, and I don’t regret it for a second.

I find it phenomenal how so much work is completed in such a short amount of time, and I thoroughly appreciate that the efforts accomplished by such a small (but extremely competent!) team here at the office. There’s nothing better than throwing a little tea party every now and then.

Science Geek

Sometimes I thought taking nutrition in university was the wrong decision. Many people suggested I study something business related or computer related, because those 2 areas seem to be more ‘me’. (I talk more about business or techy stuff than I do nutrition.)

But I was so adamant about keeping with the sciences. Either that or going into fine arts (music).

It wasn’t until the final years of my degree that I knew I had made the right decision. But when I graduated, all the jobs that interested me required a business degree!

I would’ve hated studying business though. No offense to business majors, but for me, it is useless to study business in university. Same with computers. It’s just not my interest to study certain subjects academically, even if they interest me non-academically.

I’m so stubborn, I think!

So now that I have a job (and possibly a career) where I need to *read* and determine health science related things, I realized that I definitely chose the right degree. While business and computer-stuff are more practical/intuitive to me, science is not. And I wanted to go further.

I don’t know all the science in the world, but after studying it for years, I am very comfortable with science-y stuff (even though I call it ’science-y stuff’!). If I read a case with lots of scientific jargon and discussion, I can follow it. And if not, I know how and where to look for the answer.

My science knowledge is the core of my job, but it’s surrounded by using technology and having business skills too. This is why I like my job so much. I get to use my skills in just the right way.

I’m still nervous that I’ll stop liking my job soon, but so far so good!

Job 35

1 Then Elihu said:

2 “Do you think this is just?
You say, ‘I will be cleared by God. [a] ‘

3 Yet you ask him, ‘What profit is it to me, [b]
and what do I gain by not sinning?’

4 “I would like to reply to you
and to your friends with you.

5 Look up at the heavens and see;
gaze at the clouds so high above you.

6 If you sin, how does that affect him?
If your sins are many, what does that do to him?

7 If you are righteous, what do you give to him,
or what does he receive from your hand?

8 Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself,
and your righteousness only the sons of men.

9 “Men cry out under a load of oppression;
they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.

10 But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,
who gives songs in the night,

11 who teaches more to us than to [c] the beasts of the earth
and makes us wiser than [d] the birds of the air?’

12 He does not answer when men cry out
because of the arrogance of the wicked.

13 Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea;
the Almighty pays no attention to it.

14 How much less, then, will he listen
when you say that you do not see him,
that your case is before him
and you must wait for him,

15 and further, that his anger never punishes
and he does not take the least notice of wickedness. [e]

16 So Job opens his mouth with empty talk;
without knowledge he multiplies words.”

Dumb-a-crinologist

I can’t even begin to explain how furious I am with UPMC’s idiotic and disorganized endocrine group!  Last Thursday I called the office explaining that I needed to have labs done before the weekend and that I would like to do them at the hospital near me, and I asked if they would fax them over.  They gladly agreed.  Fast forward to Monday, when I go in to get the labs drawn:  I arrive at the hospital, park and what not… I even have a friend on alert if I were to be unable to return home because I was light headed.  I walked into the over crowded waiting room, announced my name, and the nurse there just looks at me funny.  I explained to her that my prescription for the lab work had been faxed over on Thursday.  This was obviously not the case.  I thanked them, and moved on with my day, stopping to call my endocrinologist and ask her to re-fax it… this too was highly ineffective.  I finally had someone else call for me– and he even got them to fax it to our house.  So I went in yesterday uneventfully for lab work.

I know that it takes about 3 hours for the panels to come back… but that they don’t usually tell the patients until about 20 hours later– so I called, asking if my blood work had come back.  The woman who had answered the phone says “yes, they’re in… please hold a moment.  I’ll connect you to a nurse”.  I then spend the next 7 minutes on hold, while I am connected to some nurses’s voicemail.  I leave my message, knowing all the while that I wouldn’t get a response.  I then called back, told the woman that she was not available and that I need to talk to a real person.  She then connected  me to another nurse, who said, “your results are in, but I can’t tell you what they are until your doctor reviews them”.  Psht!  Fuck that!  Luckily I had a doctor’s appointment today anyway to meet with my PCP– he told my my TSH was 9.26.  This is very very BAD.  My TSH is even too high for a normal person’s TSH, let alone a thyroid cancer patient– my TSH has to be kept below 0.1, so it was almost 1000X the amount it should’ve been.  This is very bad, because TSH stimulates your body by urging it to produce more T4 (thyroid hormone), which in turn can spark new thyroid cells to grow.  My PCP decided it was time for a strong course of action and prescribed me (I was on 125mcg of Synthroid QD) 150mcg for one week and then 175mcg for two weeks, and then I’m supposed to get a blood test and my heart checked out so that it can be increased to 200mcg.  He says he expects it to need to be over 200mcgs… which is a lot.  Synthroid actually only makes increments up to 200mcg, the next one is then 300mcg… so if I need more than 200mcgs, I’m going to be taking two pills in the morning!

My PCP also got me an appointment with the best ENT surgeon in the region for tomorrow to check out what he thinks is some scar tissue building up in my throat– just so the dysphagia doesn’t worsen.

I then called my endocrinologist since they had yet to call me back, the nurse answered again and says “Oh, I was just about to call you– your TSH is still elevated, so your doctor has suggested to up your dosage to 150mcgs and get repeat labs in 6 weeks.  She says she doesn’t understand why your TSH continues to rise, and she wants to make sure you’re taking your medication first thing in the morning not with any other medications and an hour before breakfast.”  She then asked me if I needed a prescription, I said no, and she asked if my doctor had given me one before and I said no, my PCP gave it to me.  Thanks!  And hung up.  Well UPMC endocrinology, sorry, but I’m done with you idiots.  Obviously my internist can do way better than you, and since you’ve never gotten my TSH regulated and under 5, you lose.  Go fuck yourself please.

In other news, I leave the day after tomorrow for Heidelberg!  I’ll update when I am there.

Job 33

1 “But now, Job, listen to my words;
pay attention to everything I say.

2 I am about to open my mouth;
my words are on the tip of my tongue.

3 My words come from an upright heart;
my lips sincerely speak what I know.

4 The Spirit of God has made me;
the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

5 Answer me then, if you can;
prepare yourself and confront me.

6 I am just like you before God;
I too have been taken from clay.

7 No fear of me should alarm you,
nor should my hand be heavy upon you.

8 “But you have said in my hearing—
I heard the very words-

9 ‘I am pure and without sin;
I am clean and free from guilt.

10 Yet God has found fault with me;
he considers me his enemy.

11 He fastens my feet in shackles;
he keeps close watch on all my paths.’

12 “But I tell you, in this you are not right,
for God is greater than man.

13 Why do you complain to him
that he answers none of man’s words [a] ?

14 For God does speak—now one way, now another—
though man may not perceive it.

15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,
when deep sleep falls on men
as they slumber in their beds,

16 he may speak in their ears
and terrify them with warnings,

17 to turn man from wrongdoing
and keep him from pride,

18 to preserve his soul from the pit, [b]
his life from perishing by the sword. [c]

19 Or a man may be chastened on a bed of pain
with constant distress in his bones,

20 so that his very being finds food repulsive
and his soul loathes the choicest meal.

21 His flesh wastes away to nothing,
and his bones, once hidden, now stick out.

22 His soul draws near to the pit, [d]
and his life to the messengers of death. [e]

23 “Yet if there is an angel on his side
as a mediator, one out of a thousand,
to tell a man what is right for him,

24 to be gracious to him and say,
‘Spare him from going down to the pit [f] ;
I have found a ransom for him’-

25 then his flesh is renewed like a child’s;
it is restored as in the days of his youth.

26 He prays to God and finds favor with him,
he sees God’s face and shouts for joy;
he is restored by God to his righteous state.

27 Then he comes to men and says,
‘I sinned, and perverted what was right,
but I did not get what I deserved.

28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, [g]
and I will live to enjoy the light.’

29 “God does all these things to a man—
twice, even three times-

30 to turn back his soul from the pit, [h]
that the light of life may shine on him.

31 “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me;
be silent, and I will speak.

32 If you have anything to say, answer me;
speak up, for I want you to be cleared.

33 But if not, then listen to me;
be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”

30 Sec. Speech by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

VERY SHORT , MOST EFFECTIVE AND HOW TRUE

30 second Speech by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – Work , Family , Health , Friends and Spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the Air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.

But the other four Balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it.

The only think I dis-like about this site is the fact that it lists references. I personally say “references available on request” when I’m writing a resume. But it’s not that big of a deal. I found that if you copy it from your profile you can easily edit out the references and just add “references available on request”. It’s pretty simple.

Post your thoughts, views,  or maybe you have some better sites or programs.

“As a student of computing, it has been my desire to learn more about open source technologies and understand in detail what agile processes are all about.

I have been filming events and talks for Skills Matter for seven months now. It has been a very good experience working with the staff. In return for what I do, I get paid for each video and can choose a training course. I have taken the Spring course and hope to do more if time permits. I also get to attend important conferences and events organized by developer and agile communities. At these conferences I get to meet great minds, participate, learn and get the materials free of charge from the events.

Cap job runtime: Debugging periodic job policy in a Condor pool

Job policy includes a set of periodic expressions; PeriodicHold, PeriodicRelease, and PeriodicRemove. Periodic expressions on a job are evaluated in the context of the job’s ad. They should evaluate to a boolean; if PeriodicRemove is TRUE, then remove the job. They are evaluated by the Schedd and a Shadow. The Schedd evaluates them as frequently as PERIODIC_EXPR_INTERVAL, which defaults to 60 seconds in condor 7.4 and 300 before. The Shadow evaluates them periodically, based on PERIODIC_EXPR_INTERVAL, and every time it receives an update from the Starter running the job. Updates occur periodically, controlled by STARTER_UPDATE_INTERVAL on the Starter.

Say you want to put a job on hold if it runs for more than 60 seconds. To do this you need job policy and two points of reference; the start time of the job, and the current time.

The job policy you want to use is PeriodicHold.

For the two time references you need to look at a job’s ad to see what is available. You can see a job’s ad with condor_q -long. The start time is available as JobCurrentStartDate, seconds since Epoch, and it would appear that ServerTime is the current time, seconds since Epoch.

Here’s a job you might write:

executable = /bin/sleep arguments = 29m notification = never periodic_hold = (ServerTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60 queue 1

If you submit it and wait a minute you will see it is on Hold.

$ condor_q -- Submitter: robin.local : : robin.local ID OWNER SUBMITTED RUN_TIME ST PRI SIZE CMD 1.0 matt 11/5 19:03 0+00:00:19 H 0 2.0 sleep 29m 1 jobs; 0 idle, 0 running, 1 held

But, it only ran for 19 seconds. Check why.

$ condor_q -hold -- Submitter: robin.local : : robin.local ID OWNER HELD_SINCE HOLD_REASON 1.0 matt 11/5 19:04 The UNKNOWN (never set) PeriodicHold expres 1 jobs; 0 idle, 0 running, 1 held

The hold reason is truncated, but you can use condor_q -long to see all of it.

$ condor_q -long | grep ^HoldReason HoldReason = "The UNKNOWN (never set) PeriodicHold expression '' evaluated to UNDEFINED" HoldReasonCode = 5 HoldReasonSubCode = 0

This is saying that something went wrong and your PeriodicHold expression evaluated to UNDEFINED. You wanted it to evaluate to a boolean. The way expression evaluation in ClassAds happens, if part of an expression evaluates to UNDEFINED then chances are the entire expression will. For instance, the expression A + 1 will evaluate to the value of the A attribute plus 1. When A is a number like 2, the expression evaluates to 2 + 1 => 3. When A is not defined, the expression evaluates to UNDEFINED + 1 => UNDEFINED.

There is a handy way to debug expression in Condor, use the debug() ClassAd function.

Your job becomes:

executable = /bin/sleep arguments = 29m notification = never periodic_hold = debug((ServerTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60) queue 1

When you submit the job and look in either the SchedLog or ShadowLog you will see “Classad debug” messages.

ShadowLog:

...: Classad debug: ServerTime --> UNDEFINED ...: Classad debug: JobCurrentStartDate --> ERROR ...: Classad debug: JobCurrentStartDate --> 1257476798 ...: Classad debug: debug((ServerTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60) --> UNDEFINED

Very clearly, ServerTime is evaluating to UNDEFINED. That may seem strange because it looked like it was part of the job ad. However, ServerTime is somewhat special. Likely buggy. It is only added to a job ad in response to a query, e.g. condor_q. It is not actually part of the job ad. Annoying.

There is a solution. Another special attribute is CurrentTime. It is available to all expressions, but it is not a visible attribute on a job ad. Also annoying. You have to know it is there. Using it we can rewrite the job as follows.

executable = /bin/sleep arguments = 29m notification = never periodic_hold = debug((CurrentTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60) queue 1

After submitting the job and waiting a minute you can see that it has been put on hold.

$ condor_q -- Submitter: robin.local : : robin.local ID OWNER SUBMITTED RUN_TIME ST PRI SIZE CMD 3.0 matt 11/5 19:09 0+00:01:00 H 0 0.0 sleep 29m 1 jobs; 0 idle, 0 running, 1 held

The details of the hold are also much more what you would expect.

$ condor_q -long | grep ^HoldReason HoldReason = "The job attribute PeriodicHold expression 'debug((CurrentTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60)' evaluated to TRUE" HoldReasonCode = 3 HoldReasonSubCode = 0

In the ShadowLog you can see that CurrentTime is available as expected.

ShadowLog:

...: Classad debug: CurrentTime --> 1257477062 ...: Classad debug: JobCurrentStartDate --> ERROR ...: Classad debug: JobCurrentStartDate --> 1257477002 ...: Classad debug: debug((CurrentTime - JobCurrentStartDate) >= 60) --> 1

Remember to remove debug() from your expressions.

Jesaja Sport

Just over a week ago I shot a series of tshirts for a company called Jesaja Sport. It was an improvised product shoot since I don’t have access to a studio now, but the images turned out pretty much like I wanted them. The only thing that was a bit off was that one of the flashes gave up during the shoot and I had to rely on ambient lighting. I used the flash to lit up the background which was important that it was perfectly white for the client…
However I measured the white-balance and did everything I could at the shoot to get it as perfect as possible, and when I got home I spent about half an hour per image to get it as good as I could. With all the images it’s over 10 hours of work but for the sake of arguement I say 10 hours. The images was suppose to be used at Jesaja Sports webshop so they were commercial images. The client wanted all rights to the images, fine by me. The only problem is that the one running Jesaja Sport is an old classmate of mine. When I did the shooting and when I sent the samples the images was very good according to Andreas Lindh, the founder of Jesaja Sport, but when I had to state some price I got a bit of trouble. I checked what the images should be worth in a pricelist for professional photographers, then I asked for a 10% of that price and he thought that was a bit much, I know this guy and went down to 5% of the recommended price, which is a stretch I would normally never do. Then he started finding faults on the images, they were too bright on one side, they was blue and the light should be softer and so on and on… He called back a few days later and said that he could not pay 5% of the recommended price because I wasn’t good enough, basically…

So I thought about it for some hours and then I drew back everything, what bothers me the most is that asking a fraction of the price made the guy think I was ripping him off, and that there seems to be people that are doing this kind of job for a so small amount of money they can’t possible live on it… In a web-shop, like Jesaja Sport, the image is the only thing that are selling, it wouldn’t matter if you wrote a long essay about how good the product is the image is what attracts the customer… I told him this and he later used it against me, this images will apparently scare away the customers… I recommended him to go look for some studio that are specialized in product photography and not a landscape photographer next time, I’m still pissed off at Andreas Lindh and Jesaja Sport, it’s been a week, I was expecting an apologie or at least an angry email, but nothing, I though greed was one of the seven deadly sins… =)
These are the horrible images that are not good enough to sell for 5% of the recommended price… If you get some kind of eye infection from looking at them please let me know…

I will never have any more business with Jesaja Sport, at least I hope not…

Job 28

1 “There is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.

2 Iron is taken from the earth,
and copper is smelted from ore.

3 Man puts an end to the darkness;
he searches the farthest recesses
for ore in the blackest darkness.

4 Far from where people dwell he cuts a shaft,
in places forgotten by the foot of man;
far from men he dangles and sways.

5 The earth, from which food comes,
is transformed below as by fire;

6 sapphires [a] come from its rocks,
and its dust contains nuggets of gold.

7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
no falcon’s eye has seen it.

8 Proud beasts do not set foot on it,
and no lion prowls there.

9 Man’s hand assaults the flinty rock
and lays bare the roots of the mountains.

10 He tunnels through the rock;
his eyes see all its treasures.

11 He searches [b] the sources of the rivers
and brings hidden things to light.

12 “But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding dwell?

13 Man does not comprehend its worth;
it cannot be found in the land of the living.

14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
nor can its price be weighed in silver.

16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,
with precious onyx or sapphires.

17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,
nor can it be had for jewels of gold.

18 Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention;
the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

19 The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it;
it cannot be bought with pure gold.

20 “Where then does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding dwell?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
concealed even from the birds of the air.

22 Destruction [c] and Death say,
‘Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.’

23 God understands the way to it
and he alone knows where it dwells,

24 for he views the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he established the force of the wind
and measured out the waters,

26 when he made a decree for the rain
and a path for the thunderstorm,

27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
he confirmed it and tested it.

28 And he said to man,
‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.’ “

Enhancing Job Titles

http://positivesharing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/businesscard.jpgThis sort of thing drives me mad. To give you a brief description of what I mean, I’m talking about the practice of society in which we declare “They’re not a mailman, they’re a postal worker!“

Instead of picking nits upon each refinement like this, I’ve decided to come up with a few American job name changes of my own. Enjoy.

What is success?

Okay, before you get all bummed out over this week’s Dustinland, let me just say that I’m not in the midst of some deep depression or anything. This is just something I think about sometimes. You know, usually I try (try being the key word here) to make my comics funny, but once in a while I like to touch on something more serious. I know the depressing stuff is not quite as “entertaining,” but hopefully it touches on something you can relate to.

In terms of this week’s comic, I think what I’m really getting at here is that while it’s very hard to define success, there is some sort of notion we all have of an average life and an extraordinary one, and nobody wants to wind up in that first category. Of course what is considered average in a country like the US would be a fantastic life to a majority of people around the world, or throughout the history of mankind, at least in terms of financial security and quality of life. But somehow that doesn’t necessarily translate to happiness because it’s all relative to what you know, blah blah etc… let’s not get into that boring discussion. Boy this topic really leads to rambling.

I guess I’m not really sure what I’m trying to say here. Maybe I already said it as simply as I could and too many words just complicates it. Maybe it’s just that we all want to be somebody, and the older you get, the more you realize how hard that can be, and how little time you have to do it.

I'm not dead

I just disappeared a bit ;)

Well, during work I always sit in front of a laptop, so once I’m home I’m actually almost fed up with computers for the rest of the day (or night) and additionally I have to work on all the christmas presents for friends and family. Sorry but I can’t post pictures here, because some of them read this blog and it would suck for them to see what they get :D

The rest of my life is pretty quiet… OH!!!! There is some good news I need to tell you :D:D:D just for nothing my body decided to loose 6 pounds. I’m still eating chocolate, having my extreme-couching sundays… Seriously, I don’t know what happens, but it feels really good :D I just hope I won’t gain it all again once all the christmas cookies magically appear in front of my nose LOL

So, how’s your life been the last few days/ weeks?? :)

Come to speak of work: there is soooo incredibly much to do, that “co-workers” (remember, I’m just an intern) work many many additional hours, sometimes way too many. In my opinion one solution would be to work more efficiently (seriously!!! I don’t want to give out too many details, but there is definitely a huge potential!) buuuut maybe that makes room for me ;) First experiences in project management there and then moving on to the real good jobs? :D would be awesome, so keep your fingers crossed in your mind for me please, it means the world to me :) )))

Wake Up, Sucka!!

Hey you Boss Man wake up!! Have you no shame.

You come to us and tells us not to do this and not to do that. Yet you’re there in your fat ass sleeping like a baby. You look like a fat bulldog there. Sleeping, shoes off, is there anything else I could get you? Plus you leave your office open, it’s not like you leave your door was closed and I walked in. You have holes in your socks!!

You smell bad, you look sleepy and yet you complain when I wear my tie loose. Wish I took a picture you bastard. Must be nice when someone like me does all the hard work and takes all the bull shit when it’s bad and no recognition with things are going great. You bastard!! You should’ve been fired on your first week.

So the rules are:

  • No Cell Phones
  • No Homework
  • No MP3 Players
  • No Books
  • No Personal Things

Yet sleeping is prohibited? You’d come and tell me to stand up and not sit down. But you just sit there and sleep.

Fuck You, You Bastard!!!

time passes....

So yeah, a few things has been happening since I’ve been home, I’ll get to it eventually. Anyways, when I came home on Tuesday, my friend Nicole and I hung out for a bit. We watched Monsters Inc. and painted our nails and stuff.

Then Wednesday, I went to Lord and Taylor for a job interview and well I got the job^^. And when I was there, there was this really cute guy that worked there last year and was hoping he would get a job there again, I kind of hope he did, but it sort of seems he already has a couple of girls he had his eye on, so yeah, that’s my luck for you.  Then after that I don’t really remember what happened. I think I took an epic nap and then my mom and I went to the store. And after that I watched Tough Love, some good stuff especially from a psych stand point. Hmm I should go on that show, I’d be Ms. Lonely, ha, and I made pumpkin gingerbread and dinner rolls for Thanksgiving.

Moving along, Thursday was obviously Thanksgiving. The pumpkin gingerbread and dinner rolls were a hit! For anyone who actually is reading this, here’s the recipes I used:

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pumpkin-Gingerbread/Detail.aspx

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Angies-Perfect-Dinner-Rolls/Detail.aspx

But anyways, my niece is almost as tall as me, she’s not even 4 years old and she’s like about up to my chest. It’s crazy, lol.  So my sister has been applying to grad schools, mostly in California, and my mom said if she’s going to California, then we are. I wasn’t sure if she was serious or not. But imaging starting a new life in California, hmm. I wouldn’t mind it so much, but there’s definitely a few things I do want to work on before venturing out to California.  Also to my shock my sister said she wants to learn what I’m learning, and I was just like O.O I don’t think I ever heard my sister said that to me, mean yeah psychology can be very interesting, but yeah. I’m usually the one saying that to her. Well moving along,  my friend Britney had some news, big epic news that she is pregnant..and she asked me if she were to keep the baby if I would be an auntie, and I almost started to cry and felt honored and I wish she was telling me in person so I could have hugged her.  It would be nice to be an aunt to 3 little ones, my neice, my soon to be niece or nephew, Lori is pregnant, and the baby is due in July, and Britney’s baby. ^^

Anyways, this leads me to today. Today was training day at Lord and Taylor and I was so nervous. Amy, the manager, said on Wednesday, that it’s going to be a crash course and they’re just putting me there. and if I have any questions, that they’ll be people around to help me. But, I guess she just said that to prepare me or something. Means, its Black Friday, that will be crazy if she did that, you know? Mean it would sort of slow things down, which is bad on a day like Black Friday. So today wasn’t as bad as i thought it would be. I could have stayed until one, but I wasn’t wearing the most comfortable shoes and we were allowed to leave right after the training orientation, so yeah probably a bad move on my part, but I should have brought my comfortable shoes back home, and we can’t wear sneakers, since its basically white glove kind of service.  But the other people at the training orientation were nice, and we all seemed to get along.

After that my mom and I went to Costco to do some shopping, and it was a mad house in there. I couldn’t wait to get out of there, at least I didn’t need a lot of things.

Today has been cold, rainy, and windy, a perfect day for staying indoors, which is what I basically did when I came home. So since then, I’ve been drinking tea and watching the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, a really good anime.

Lately, I have been having a more sudden interest in asian culture, eating habits to be more exact.  It just seems to be much more healthier, in fact I remember watching a video where this lady was comparing the American diet to the Japanese diet, and how much more healthier the Japanese diet was, and it quite obvious why too.

Eliza and I are talking about eating more healthier once we get back, which is the smart thing to do. The health habits you form in college are usually the ones that you stick with for the rest of the  majority of your life. And we’re going to post things on our walls to help motivate us too. And also do more yoga and exercising.

And why I just realized how long this is getting, and I still have a couple of other things I want to write about.

So yesterday I had this weird, strange, empty eerie feeling when I got home. Thats the best I could explain it, it just happens at random, and I can’t explain why it happens, it just does.

And all of the sudden, well so far today really, I was really nervous to talk to Josh, I don’t know why. Mean usually before, when I liked a guy and I was about to IM them I would get really nervous, and panicky . But with him that never happens, except for today I guess, I don’t know it just seemed weird.

Hmm also I want to start writing more short stories. I think it would help with my writing.  But I’m not in the mood right now, and I’m so bored, and the disappearance of haruhi suzumiya isn’t dubbed,  so I’m just reading the whole time.

Ehh, well thats all for now. Not much to say now.

Hmm, maybe he just isn’t there. It’s been awhile and he hasn’t said anything yet. Eh oh well.
